Purgatory/Peace

Each year, the buds and seeds of many plants subject themselves to the brutal Montana winter. They survive in a freezing state of purgatory, dried-out, in-between life and death. When spring finally comes and the soil thaws, these plants will realize the connections they were destined to make with the earth. Their exposed seeds will successfully burrow into the soil and sprout, or be eaten by animals, or simply wither away and decompose, returning necessary nutrients to the ecosystem.

Earth leaves us in a state of purgatory, too. We go through our lives living somewhere between birth and death, and our final purpose can only be realized when our bodies are returned to the earth.
